ONIONTOWN HAS HAD IT. After another visit from out-of towners eager to mock the tiny community, state police investigators are saying, in effect, "Nonresidents, you don't have to go home, but you gotta get the hell outta here."
Police asked the two teens, a pair of 17-year olds from Mahopac, N.Y., if they had come to mock the town and then post it online, and they were forced to admit they had indeed. Instead they were pelted with rocks by an angry group of local residents, which apparently the filmers had not expected to be a part of their online video. Future nonresidents have a common destiny: pain.
A female passenger suffered injuries to her head and face, and the male driver also got what was coming to him.
Oniontown, a small, Poughkeepsie-area hamlet about 30 clicks north of Mahopac--no stranger to abandoned cars and trailer parks and muttonchop sideburns--has become the butt of online jokes and YouTube's current absorption. In "Oniontown Adventures," one of the pioneers of the genre, three foul-mouthed boys drive through hurling epithets during a tour through the town's run down section, which is all of it. As they muse upon the fact that their physical welfare may be in question, the cameraman records his frontseat friend observing the McDonalds Snackwrap© in his lap, exclaiming, "This is what I call the 'last supper,' " still giggling. "Jesus ain't got nothin' on this!" They hadn't seen urban poverty on this scale since Clarice Starling accidentally stumbled upon Buffalo Bill in Belvedere, Ohio. "The biggest recommendation is for everybody to stay [the fug] out of there," state police investigator Eric Shaefer told reporters. "Anybody that doesn't belong there, anybody that's not a resident, just stay out of Oniontown."
Sheesh. Police say it wasn't the first time different people have been attacked and they say they know the Dutchess County community has become the brunt of jokes online. But did they deserve it? The name of the community was already Oniontown. Could their life get any worse? What were they thinking, naming the town Oniontown anyway? Do they cry all the time? Is there a giant rock carving of one in the middle of the town square? It is not yet known whether Julia Childs or Emeril had anything to do with it.
From the beginning this lonesome village has been a laboratory for aspiring YouTubers, a stern school majoring in just one subject: the Science of Being Made Fun Of.
Seen from the back windows of the various cars that have "toured" the area, it looks like a perenially overcast, garbage-strewn, unsun-flooded portrait of rustic despair, a place of no activity, impressive only because the eye does not expect to see such dire straits in this part of downstate New York. No one loiters in front of their trailers and falling-apart wooden houses with chipped paint on them. They're all inside: bitter, xenophobic, religious; clinging to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them. Many dirt paths and roads appear to be the only access into the place; there were no paved streets. Other YouTube titles include "A Day in Inbred Town" and "Return to Fishkill."
How did the residents get wise that their town was becoming a national laughingstock? "I'm from Oniontown," one of the residents recently posted, calmly and simply. "I'm the one that first tipped my family off about all this youtube [stuff] 18 months ago....Since then about 30 cars of our 'fans' have had a meeting with the scrap yard, along with many 'fans' having a visit to the ER. As one that has an interest in making sure this does not elevate to something more 'harmful,'.....if you don't have any business in Oniontown, you don't have any business in Oniontown."

I just think it's funny that the people of this small community got wise to what was going on. At least it seems that they did anyway.
I live about 25-30 minutes from Oniontown, and it has always been a local area of legend. It was legend to us that it formed from escapees of the local mental hospital after it closed. This rumor is in fact false, as Oniontown was around before the closing of the hospital, which is also a freaky looking place in Dover. Oniontown was actually formed by farmers who stayed on an onion farm after it went bankrupt. Oniontown is a small community with many RUMORS since. I personally have heard about Oniontown long before the Youtube fiascos and rock throwings, and I have never ventured in there. The point is that this is a small community that is not really cut off as Youtubers believe. The kids attend the local Dover schools, and I'm sure they are nice people. This little community is really not much different from other upstate New York communities consisting of run-down housing and trailers. Oniontowns exist everywhere, and the town actually opted to change the newly famous "Oniontown Rd" to "Seven Wells Rd." however this didn't happen. Really what people need to see is the fact that many Americans are living in poverty and can't afford the finer things in life. Dutchess County must have over 100 trailer parks around and they range from very nice retirement communities to the backwoods places we have recently seen highlighted. The point is, the Oniontown residents are annoyed. I would be annoyed to if someone came driving into the Town of Poughkeepsie and had something to say. The point is that rich spoiled Westchester kids need to find something productive to do. Stop mocking those who don't have Mommy's and Daddy's that can buy anything for them. This rich yuppies should stay in Westchester and out of Dutchess County. I can't wait till one of these spoiled rotten kids gets hurt with something other than a rock, then they might really heed the warning to stop harassing those less fortunate than themselves. For now they are lucky it was only rocks, because up here in Dutchess County the right to bear arms is fully practiced in many households, and Oniontown is not excluded from that. So heed the warnings the police and Oniontown residents have already given. Stay out or something bad will happen. Go spend Mommy and Daddy's money at the mall.
I'm from the area (Dutchess) and i've heard the horror stories. I understand that Oniontown is a private community, but still, the citizens should do more to bar the uninhibited violence directed toward unwelcome visitors. Honestly, a friend of mine went up there without preconceptions with the idea of having a chat with town high ups and his tires were slashed. C'mon.

what the hell is this oniontown?? i got bored surfing the internet and stumbled on oniontown. i saw the internet videos and i HAVE driven through it before when i got lost, but i never had any idea what it was about. i am 22 and kinda poor and have been on my own for a while now, but i try to dress nice so i could be mistaken for a wealthy kid causing trouble. when i got lost going through there, no one bothered me, but if they did they'd be in for one nasty surprise. i am licensed to carry a firearm and i carry an extremely powerful magnum revolver and have a tactical shotgun in my vehicle at all times. i've read the online posts and stories and these impovershed "inbreds" have no right to assault or possibly kill some just they're being mental midgets and causing mischief. if one of these backwoods people try and hurl a rock through my windshield to try hurt or kill me, then i'll hurl a slug right at their head and kill one of them because i WILL defend myself if my life is in danger. forget being afraid, i will take someone out if they try to put my life in danger, i learned that the hard way growing up in the "hood".

I actually went through Oniontown....at first I wasnt sure that I went there b/c there was no sign that said where we were, however we kept driving and there were run down houses and chickens running everywhere...and we were like maybe this is it and we should leave b/c it was getting really sketchy...then the whole road ran out and started throwing rocks at the car...and one guy even took his foot and stomped out the window with his foot....scariest shit of my life...I hope nobody will ever go back there b/c the only reason I got out was pure luck

Go to google earth type in dover plains, NY go to the south west a little and bam you will see oniontown rd. Its very small, just a road. Probably no more then 50 - 100 people live there maybe even less. I have also been there and this little black chick threw a boulder at my friends head. Thank god it hit the door frame and not just the window because he probably would of died. Scary shit in there!!!

Ive been to Lundy's and the MafiaHouse in Pottersville. Friends and I have been to abandoned buildings in Phillipsport, Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Kerhonkson, even Bennett College in Millbrook. Weve broken bones and felt paranormal activities around us. Were not afraid of too much to be honest. My friends went past Dover into Oniontown, and the car came back with over 1700$ in damage. I would like to go there and talk to locals to understand exactly whats going on, eat at a local diner etc. If you want to stop the problems that happen in your town, be polite. Throwing rocks wont stop people from coming, just have police tell us to stop and more daring kids go. Your taking out the idiots, and bringing in the rebels.
i lived down the road from "OT" as we all called it. it has always (since I've know it) been a unsafe place. people who want to run away and hide find refuge in this small hidden area. a lot of shady deeds are done there and they like to keep there secrets. I don't know who the kids from mohopac were BUT my i have cousins who went through an almost exact same chain of events, even the head injury ( maybe it was them and they just changed there home town for some reason). Every one knows you don't go into onion town. Actually, for your guys' information. People who live here aren't mean unless you get on there bad side! NONE of them are "inbred". there is at least 5 generations in OT. None of which are inbred. There ARE signs that clearly say "No Trespassing". The only way you can get into OT is by going on the road...that road doesn't lead anywhere else only there. Anyone injured in any trespassing accidents should never had disobeyed the signs.
